Our Purpose and Priority!

Deut 6:1-9
1 "Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the Lord your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, 2 that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you — 'a land flowing with miland honey.'  4 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.  6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.  NKJV

This passage has two divisions in it.

1. Our purpose
2. Our Priority

1. Our Purpose
4 "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!  5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

  • This passage focuses on our relationship with God which is to be lived out and passed down

1. Love God with all of your heart

Heart: the place where the rational thinking process occurs

  • It is the place in us that has been developed by life experiences creating an internal command center!

  • It is where we rationalize things out and make decisions based on those life experiences! (trauma)
  • What is the problem with that statement?

  • It is how we understand things even if our understanding is misguided!

This passage is telling us that we must love God in this area, therefore life experiences must submit itself to God, if not it is halfhearted love!

2. Love God with all your Soul

Soul: breath, the inner being with its thoughts and emotions.

  • The soul is our emotional outward expressions interacting with the world around us!
  • If we do not submit our heart to God, all people will see is false reactions

This passage is telling us that we must love God in these areas, therefore life experiences must submit to God, as well as our interactions with those around us, if not it is halfhearted!

3. With all of your strength

Strength: power, will and physical capacity

  • It is important to note that our body doesn’t have a soul, our soul has a body and is must be willing to be used!  Our soul can live without a body!
These passages is telling us that we must love God in these areas, with our heart, soul and strength submitted to God, if not it is halfhearted!

II. Our Priority

Deut 6:6-9
6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

1. You shall teach them to your children!

When dealing with our children, they should see us demonstrating our wholehearted love for God?

  • This is the difference between a Godly Home and a secular worldly home!

  • There are good homes without God, but there’s more to than that!

  • The church can only help, schools can only help, but it must be parents’ priority!

2. You should talk to them when you sit in your house, walk by the way, when you lie down and wake up!

  • This is the main place for spiritual lessons!

  • It means you are alert for life lessons in your daily conversation!
  • You are weaving your life lessons into theirs!
  • It is where you teach them how to deal with success and failure!
  • You pray with them about their life decision!
  • They see you pray for each other in the family!

3. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

  • Bind them on your hands

  • The Word of God should have preeminence in your everyday actions
  • This shows us that there is no separation in the Christian life and our secular affairs!

  • Should be as frontlets between your eyes

  • This means your thought life!
  • How are you managing your private world?
  • No one is greater than their own private world!

  • Write them on the door post and your gates

  • This is a reminder to the whole family that that as we come and go in this life, we are to love God with our whole Heart, Soul, and Strength!
  • It is a reminder to those that visit us, that we love God with our whole Heart, Soul, and Strength!

None of this can be accomplished unless we first submit our whole being to God first!

Josh 13:13
13 But the Israelites failed to drive out the people of Geshur and Maacah, so they continue to live among the Israelites to this day. NLT (half-hearted obedience)

  • David married Maacah a Geshurite princess mother of Absalom who murdered Amnon because he rapped his sister and later rebelled against David dividing the nation of Israel!
