Faith Found

I. The Original Meaning: Pistis

The Translation Problem: Our English words "faith" and "belief" have lost their original first-century definitions.

A Street-Level Word: In the ancient world, pistis was not a religious word—it was a political, legal, and military term for an unbreakable oath.

The Sacramentum Militare:
○ The sacred oath sworn by a Roman soldier entering the military.
○ The Deposit of Life: The soldier legally placed his life on deposit with his commander. Total allegiance was expected; desertion meant your life was forfeit.
○ This military oath is the exact origin of our English word "sacrament" (expressed today in Baptism and Communion).

2. The Biblical Data vs. Modern Definitions

The New Testament Frequency:
○ Pistis (Noun = "Faith") is translated 243 times
○ Pisteuō (Verb = "Believe") is translated 241 times
○ In all 484 instances, this root concept implies entering or maintaining a binding covenant oath.

The Modern English Distortions:
○ Modern "Faith" = An internal emotional state of hope or optimism without proof.
○ Modern "Belief" = Simply getting enough information to finally agree with a set of facts (mental assent).

The Disconnect: Neither of our modern English definitions contains an oath, a vow, or a change of legal status. They require zero skin in the game.

3. The Sidewalk, the Seat, and the Vow

The Texas Cyclone Metaphor:
○ The Sidewalk: Gathering information, watching the ride, auditing the safety records, and agreeing it works from a safe distance.
○ The Seat: Stepping across the line, getting in, and letting the security bar lock. You are safe in the seat regardless of the violence of the drops.

The Scriptural Parallel: The Marriage Vow
○ Relationships naturally progress: Stranger → Acquaintance → Friend → Covenant Spouse.
○ The formal vow is the objective anchor that separates marriage from every other casual relationship.
○ The Binary Switch: A marriage vow is binary—like a light switch, it is either ON or OFF. It is a permanent change of identity and legal reality, independent of daily shifting feelings.

In Summary
Pistis is a vow, not a psychological performance metric or a spiritual bank account you have to pump up.

Salvation is a binary account completely secure between the Father and the Son. We are simply partakers in Their perfection.

The Scandal of Grace:
○ In the Roman Legion, deserting your oath meant a death sentence.
○ When we wander and play the part of Gomer (Hosea), the Father doesn't execute us for desertion—He steps down to the slave block and purchases us back.

Faith in Action: Ceasing the struggle to "believe harder" on the sidewalk, stepping into the seat, and surrendering to the ride.

Closing Challenge
Will you stop trying to save yourself by "believing harder," and just surrender to the King who keeps His vow even when you break yours?
