The Different Phases of the Holy Spirit: The Impact!
The Comforter: One who comes forward to represent Christ
After the Ascension of Christ, the early church lived with a different conviction as to its calling and purpose
The impact of the Holy Spirit on their life changed everything!
They were changed from weak-fleshly people to a powerful church that lived out their conviction!
They had been given a Holy Calling and Purpose and acted on it, as a result they changed the known world at the time
There are two basic features that stand out as a result
Acts 2:42-47 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer.43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. NLT
They come together for Edification: Worship, Word, Prayer and Fellowship
Went out for Evangelization: They added to the church!
Acts 9:31 31 The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers. NLT
That is the place where we need to continue to develop Hosanna!
Remember, it started out with the Holy Spirit’s activity in their life
The Four phases of the Holy Spirit's workings we looked at last week: Conviction, Receiving, Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and Continual Filling!
I want to bring more clarity to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit because of the confusion surrounding the topic!
Baptism of the Holy Spirit
Matt 3:11 11 "I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I'm not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. NLT
John: Baptize: to dip, Immerse, submerge for a religious purpose, to overwhelm, saturate,
Baptism was a sign to show that you have repented
He: Jesus Baptize: to dip, Immerse, submerge for a religious purpose, to overwhelm, saturate
Johns’ immersion, saturation, etc. was with water
Jesus’s immersion, saturation, etc. was with the Holy Spirit!
Holy Spirit: Fire: irresistibility, desire, and yearning.
Most scholars interpret it to say “Holy Spirit Fire”
John 7:37-39 37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, "Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'" 39 (When he said "living water," he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.) NLT
Acts 1:4-8 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 6 So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, "Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?" 7 He replied, "The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." NLT
What was the purpose for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
When the Holy Spirit’s Fire produces the desire and yearning, power comes with it!
Power to do what is impossible to do without divine enablement!
Peter had denied Jesus 3 times, cut people ears off, and cursed people and when this POWER came, he boldly preached the gospel and 3000 were saved!
That didn’t improve talking skills, or personality development!
Come: resting upon and operating in a person Upon: to rest, influence upon or over any person or thing Witness: One who has information or knowledge of something, and hence, one who can give information, bring to light, or confirm something
Jesus will send the Holy Spirit to influence you and saturate you with irresistible desire, yearning and power to flow out of you to be a witness of the King and His Kingdom
Acts 2:1-4 2 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. NLT
Filled: Present Tense: Continuous, Ongoing Action
And overflow that should spill out on others!
Passive Voice: You Receive the Action (something done to you)
Acts 2:14-18 14 Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, "Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. 15 These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o'clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel: 17 'In the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. 18 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy. NLT
The Holy Spirit was filling Peter with irresistible desire and fire, and the power came out!
Fire was poured in Peter, and Power came out with Discerning of spirit, Word of Knowledge
Acts 13:9-12 9 Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he looked the sorcerer in the eye. 10 Then he said, "You son of the devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of all that is good! Will you never stop perverting the true ways of the Lord? 11 Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight for some time." Instantly mist and darkness came over the man's eyes, and he began groping around begging for someone to take his hand and lead him. 12 When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord. NLT
Fire was poured into Paul, and power came out with the Discerning of spirits, Word of Knowledge, prophecy!
Acts 19:4-7 4 Paul said, "John's baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus." 5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all. NLT
The Fire was poured into the People, and power came out with the gifts of tongues and prophecy!
None of this will happen in our lives until we surrender and allow the Holy Spirit Fire to saturate our whole being! (baptism)
1 Thess 5:18-24 18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. 22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. 23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. KJV
Quench: extinguish, damper, suppress
Without the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, people walk around without supernatural impartation, allowing the world and personal trauma cause them not to be bold!
Are you giving the Holy Spirit total access, or are you holding back the keys?
For the fire of God to move through us without restriction, we have to surrender every single part of who we are—our spirit, our soul, and our body.
Your Spirit is the core where the Holy Spirit dwells and speaks.
When He speaks, what he says must flow through us to those around us!
Your Soul (your mind, will, and emotions) is the bridge where you daily choose to align with His promptings.
When we choose to live the way we want, we are quenching, grieving, and the restriction happens
Eph 4:30-32 30 And do not bring sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. NLT
Your Body is the physical vehicle—the "earth suit"—meant to carry His power into the world.
It will carry out whatever the soul allows!
When you fully yield all three dimensions to Him, the Holy Spirit doesn't just fill you; He flows through you to impact everyone you cross paths with. Don't put out the fire!
