The Source of the Spirit-Filled Life: The Divine Ecosystem
As a result of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead, things were beginning to be stirred up with the religious leaders, and Jesus knew His hour had come. (Passover)
He begins to discuss His departure
We learned that the disciples were concerned that they were going to be abandoned, but Jesus reassured them that there was someone coming who was of “the same kind but different”!
He tells them that they would not be abandoned like the orphans, because they are heirs!
It is interesting to note that Jesus introduces the Holy Spirit (comforter) in John Chapter 14 and explains the work of the Holy Spirit (comforter) in John 16.
Comforter: an advocate, aid, one who comes forward on behalf of and as the representative of another.
Between the two passages, Jesus introduces the Ecosystem of the Spirit-Filled life!
The Ecosytem of The Spirit Filled Life is how the Godhead works, “the same but different”: Hearing from the Father, glorifying the finished work of Christ, and showing it to us!
John 15:1-4 15 "I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. NLT
1. The Vine (Jesus): The main trunk. He is the source of all spiritual life, stamina, and strength. 2. The Gardener (The Father): The manager. He watches over, protects, and strategically shapes the vineyard. 3. The Branches (Us): The extension of a highway system for moving water and nutrients from the roots to the fruit. We are designed entirely for connection. The primary tool of the Gardener is His Word in this Eco-system.
John 15:3 3 You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you NLT
John 15:7 7 But if you remain (abide) in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! NLT
John 16:12-15 12 "There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can't bear it now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, 'The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.' NLT
4. The Sap (The Holy Spirit): The invisible life-force. He delivers nutrients, illumination, and truth directly into our hearts. (this is my add-on and why)
As the Holy Spirit illuminates scripture or brings truth to your heart, it acts like a sharp, surgical knife to prune unbiblical beliefs in our lives.
The Holy Spirit exposes where we are relying on ourselves, convicts us of misaligned priorities, and cleanly cuts away the excess baggage so you can rest fully in the Vine.
The Primary Purpose of the Gardner 15:1 "I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn't produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. NLT
John 15:1-2 15 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. KJV
He Cuts off: (he taketh away) to lift up from the ground
The Gardener gently lifts the muddy branches that have fallen to the ground, washes them off, and ties them back to the trellis so they can receive sunlight and sap.
This represents God restoring and lifting up believers when they are discouraged or downcast.
The Fruitful Branch (Kathairo): to cleanse or to purge.
The Gardener cuts back healthy growth so the branch doesn't waste its vital energy (the Sap) on unnecessary leaves.
The Pruning: Believers must not confuse pruning with discipline.
Discipline is meant to correct bad behavior (child training)
Pruning is meant to “increase spiritual capacity” in an already healthy believer by cutting away good distractions.
Pruning is the removal of things that are draining your time, energy, and spiritual focus. The Gardener removes:
"Suckers": Some “Suckers” are healthy-looking green shoots that steal sap but never grow fruit.
They look green and healthy, but they consume massive amounts of sap without ever producing grapes.
In life, these are good activities, opportunities, or relationships that are not part of God's specific assignment for you and are draining your spiritual energy.
We should all regularly step back and consider what’s going on in our lives!
2 Sam 21:15-17 15 Once again the Philistines were at war with Israel. And when David and his men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and exhausted. 16 Ishbi-benob was a descendant of the giants; his bronze spearhead weighed more than seven pounds, and he was armed with a new sword. He had cornered David and was about to kill him. 17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David's rescue and killed the Philistine. Then David's men declared, "You are not going out to battle with us again! Why risk snuffing out the light of Israel?" NLT
The seasons of victory change in our lives!
John 15:6 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. NLT
Some Suckers are useless branches (Past Seasons): Branches that bore fruit last year but are now dry and brittle must be cut away.
These are past methods, old routines, or seasons of life that were good then, but will block new growth if you cling to them.
Toxic habits, pride, self-reliance, and destructive mindsets that hinder your ability to love and serve others effectively.
The Shift in Responsibility
When you understand this divine ecosystem, the pressure of performance completely vanishes:
You are not responsible for being the source—that’s the Vine's job. (Jesus)
You are not responsible for the management—that’s the Gardener's job. (The Father)
You are not responsible for the production—that’s the Sap's job. (The Holy Spirit)
Your job is simply to abide: to continue to be present, in relation.
The branch's entire design and function are outward, existing completely for the benefit of things outside itself.
Gal 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. KJV
When we abide in Christ, the harvest will be abundant!
John 15:5-17 5 "I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you're joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can't produce a thing. 6 Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. 7 But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. 8 This is how my Father shows who he is — when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples. 9 "I've loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you'll remain intimately at home in my love. That's what I've done — kept my Father's commands and made myself at home in his love. 11 "I've told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. 12 This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. 13 This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. 14 You are my friends when you do the things I command you. 15 I'm no longer calling you servants because servants don't understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I've named you friends because I've let you in on everything I've heard from the Father. 16 "You didn't choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won't spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you. 17 "But remember the root command: Love one another. (The Message)
